SAULT STE. MARIE - New Democrats will make life more affordable for Sault Ste. Marie families, said Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.

“We can bring change that helps families who are feeling squeezed,” said Horwath. “Wages have stayed the same for over a decade, but the cost of everything keeps climbing. We can make life more affordable by rewarding real job creators and starting to take the HST off essentials like hydro, home heating and gasoline.”

At a community roundtable this afternoon, Horwath met and spoke with Sault residents concerned about the growing cost of living.

The average wage in Ontario hasn’t increased in real terms in over a decade and more and more families say they’re struggling to keep up.

Horwath noted that her plan would reduce the provincial portion of the HST on gasoline by one percent every year along with exemptions for hydro and home heating.

A couple with two children will save $375 by the fourth year.

“Strong, resilient household budgets are the bedrock of a secure, strong economy. If Ontario’s households are in good financial shape then Ontario’s economy will follow,” added Horwath.
