NEWS RELEASE

MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

*************************** Forest fire situation update - East Fire Region

There has been one new fire reported in the East Fire Region within the last 24 hours.

Parry Sound 17 was reported at 0.2 hectares and is not yet under control.

There are no problems anticipated with this fire.

The forest fire hazard in the region is low to moderate.

Fire rangers and emergency support personnel from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources are providing support to the storm recovery efforts going on in the City of Vaughan with a total of 53 personnel.

Extensive training in hazardous environments and in chainsaw use in forest fire situations makes fire rangers well positioned to provide assistance in recovery situations such as storm clean up.

In addition to the personnel, chainsaws and other support equipment is being provided.

Ontario support also continues with the firefighting effort in British Columbia as new fires challenge the fire service in that province.

The total number of Ontario personnel in British Columbia is approximately 299.

Always remember to be FireSmart.

If you're planning a campfire, remember to pick a designated campfire pit if available or choose a safe site on bare rock or soil, keep the fire small, never leave it unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site.
