************************* Break and enter prevention tips

There have been three reports of residential break and enters that have occurred during the daytime hours over the past three days.

Half of all home burglaries occur during the day when alert neighbors could spot and report the thieves.

If you are a neighbour and observe any suspicious person/s or activity in the area, call the police.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind the public of some break-in prevention tips:

- Make your home appear occupied when you go out.

- Lock all doors and windows.

- Secure all doors with a good deadbolt lock.

- Install an alarm system.

- Leave lights on and the radio playing.

- Use timing devices to turn inside lights on and off.

- Keep your garage door closed and locked.

- Lock all sheds.

- If you will be gone several days, arrange to have the mail and papers stopped or picked up. If you do not have anyone that can do this, the post office, for a minimal fee can hold your mail until your return.

- Inform your trusted neighbours you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on your residence or even park their car in your driveway. In winter, arrange for someone to shovel your driveway. - Keep valuables that may be irreplaceable in a safety deposit box, out of site in or home or in an isolated location.

- Take an inventory of your property. Use photos, videos, and /or DVDs. Record serial number, engrave an identifying mark on property - this makes it easier for police to identify your property and harder for the criminal to sell/pawn.
