A website was launched today by the project team working on a proposal to have Sault Ste. Marie considered as a potential site to host a ferrochrome processing facility (FPF).

Available here, it contains details on this initiative, including frequently asked questions, a timeline and updates. The site also features a feedback section.

“We’re in the very early stages of this proposed development, and we’re using the website to communicate with the public and provide citizens with background information,” said project lead Dan Hollingsworth, executive director of business development for the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation. “We’re committed to releasing as many details as possible as our team works its way through the proposal process.”

Noront Resources Ltd. is planning to build an FPF in northern Ontario. Sault Ste. Marie is shortlisted as one of four potential locations. A project team, comprised of representatives from the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and City of Sault Ste. Marie, is exploring this opportunity and producing a proposal on the community’s competitive advantages. Submissions are due Feb. 2.

Once Noront selects a city as a feasible site, a comprehensive, multi-year environmental assessment and consultation process will commence. Only after this takes place, and only if the project passes environmental regulations, will any construction begin on the plant.

If developed, the FPF would employ between 300 and 500 people directly, along with more than 1,000 indirectly through suppliers and other businesses. To learn more, visit the website.
