Weather watches upgraded to warnings

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 2:25 p.m. for Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake - Gogama - Foleyet.

Similar warnings and/or watches are in effect for the Greater Sudbury, North Bay West Nipissing and Kirkland Lake, New Liskeard, Temagami regions.

This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.

If threatening weather approaches take immediate safety precautions.

A cold front will slowly move across northeastern Ontario today and reach the Nickel Belt region late this afternoon to early this evening.

The advancing cold front will trigger scattered thunderstorms ahead of it in the hot and humid air where the mercury has already reached 30 degrees celcius near Lake Nipissing.

These thunderstorms will mainly occur over the southeastern quadrant of Gogama and Kirkland Lake south towards the Nickel Belt region this afternoon and evening.

There is the potential that some of these thunderstorms may reach severe limits with main threats being large hail, damaging wind gusts and torrential downpours.
