Highway 17 between Batchawana Bay and White River is closed due to adverse weather conditions.

All lanes were closed shortly before 10 p.m. this evening.

Environment Canada issued a winter weather travel advisory for the region that includes Searchmont, Montreal River and Batchawana Bay.

Full text of that advisory follows:

Weather advisory in effect for:
    •    Searchmont - Montreal River Harbour - Batchawana Bay

Winter weather travel advisory in effect beginning near midnight tonight.

Hazards:
Lake effect snow off Lake Superior, at times heavy, with total snowfall amounts near 10 cm possible in many areas.

Wind gusts up to 70 km/h causing very low visibilities at times in blowing snow.

When:
Starting at midnight then overnight into Thursday.

Discussion:
Strong southwest winds will bring lake effect snow bands from Lake Superior inland at times beginning near midnight, then continuing into Thursday. Peak snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm in an hour or two are possible.

Travel will be impacted during this period, especially along Highway 17.

Snow squall warnings have been issued for areas just to the north of this region.

The snow will taper to flurries Thursday afternoon.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
