Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area advocates for stronger communities through decent, affordable housing on World Habitat Day 2012

SAULT STE. MARIE - In recognition of World Habitat Day [October 1] 2012, Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area (HFHSSMA) is planning a Nail Sale Blitz and a Charity Auction to address the need for decent housing around the world, and in Sault Ste. Marie and Area.

Habitat will be set up at Rome’s Independent Grocer, and Pino’s Get Fresh from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at Station Mall (across from Roots) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Our World Habitat Day fundraiser, the Nail Sale Blitz, will provide much needed funds for our current and upcoming builds.

Nail cards will be available for $2.

We will also be providing information and answering questions about Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area.

At 7 p.m. we will be holding a charity auction at the ReStore (corner of North St. and Second Line).

The Trailer Park Boys have generously donated furnishings from the set of their newest project, Swearnet: The Movie, filmed in Sault Ste. Marie.

An exciting array of items from the set will be up for auction, don’t miss out on your chance to take home a piece of local movie history!

“HFHSSMA builds homes by working side by side, in partnership, with those who do not have adequate shelter. We volunteer not out of charity or superiority but because we believe in sharing on an equal basis the dreams for a better life for us all.” - Linda Lewis, President, Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area

Habitat for Humanity’s theme for World Habitat Day 2012, Many Homes, One Community, highlights the vital role that decent, affordable housing plays in community stabilization and development.

The focus is on the importance of homeownership in a neighborhood’s progress.

Beginning on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, and continuing throughout October and November, Habitat for Humanity International and affiliated organizations will host hundreds of local events world wide - from builds and flash mobs to parades, contests, housing forums and everything in between - to draw attention to the need for safe, decent, affordable shelter for all.

Habitat for Humanity International will also launch its annual Shelter Report, which will focus on the role of the home in a neighborhood’s progression.

The two-month observance of the need for safe, decent and affordable shelter and the pivotal role of housing in community development will culminate with Habitat’s flagship annual event, the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

The 29th annual Carter Work Project returns to Haiti as part of its two-year effort to strengthen and support Habitat’s work there.

The United Nations established World Habitat Day in 1985 to spotlight the need for adequate shelter worldwide.

On the first Monday in October each year, Habitat for Humanity affiliates and national organizations raise their collective voice, taking action to change the systems, policies and attitudes that lead to poverty housing, and engaging partners in solutions.

Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste Marie and Area is an independent, non-profit housing program dedicated to building affordable homes in partnership with families.

Homeowners contribute Sweat Equity volunteer hours, repaying a long term, interest free mortgage.

HFHSSMA has broken ground on our seventh home in Sault Ste Marie.

These builds were possible with the generous support of many individuals, groups and businesses within the community.
