City Councillors voted last night to let the Sports and Entertainment Centre Steering Committee post a position worth more than $50,000 a year.

"For the facility to get off on the right foot, the marketing and events coordinator should be on board as soon as possible," City Commissioner of Community Services Nick Apostle told Council.

Apostle said that that the committee worked closely with Tourism Sault Ste. Marie and the City's Human Resources department to develop a job description for the position.

"We need to be applying for functions and events for next year now," said Committee Chair and Ward 1 Councillor James Caicco.

Caicco said that it's very important that the position be filled soon so the new hire has time to find and book events for the new facility.

"People are booking next year's events now. We need to get someone out there," Caicco said.

The City is looking for someone with highly specialized skills, who can bring in events and make sure the people hosting those events are happy with the results so they'll come back.

The position is defined as an entry-level management position and the pay scale is $52,721 to $62,768 a year, Apostle said in his report to Council.

The job description says the marketing and events coordinator's primary function is to market the division's facilities to prospective shows and events, as well as to government, business and industry.
