*************************** SASA welcomes delegation from Walking for the Past, Present and Future Generations of Aboriginal Children

SAULT STE. MARIE - (August 12) - The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Association (SASA) of Algoma University will be welcoming lead walker Tamara Malcolm and a group from the Walking for the Past, Present and Future Generations of Aboriginal Children campaign to the campus on Friday, August 14.

A dinner is planned for 5 p.m. in the Shingwauk Auditorium, to be followed by a presentation by Malcolm at 6 p.m.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the presentation.

The Walking for the Past, Present and Future Generations of Aboriginal Children campaign officially began on August 1, 2009.

Malcolm and the group are making their way from Winnipeg to Ottawa.

The purpose of the walk, as stated by Malcolm, is to "raise awareness about the healing process for Aboriginal families who have been affected by their children being put in care and to address what needs to change."

Other aims of the project include: beginning the healing process for Aboriginal families who have been affected by their children being put in care; honouring and acknowledging all parents who never saw their Aboriginal children again because of the "60's scoop"; and building bridges and opening dialogue regarding what needs to change in the current child welfare system for Aboriginal children and families.

On Friday August 14, the group of walkers arrives in Sault Ste. Marie en route to their destination of Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Thanks to the initiative of current Algoma U Law and Justice and Political Science student Cheryl Suggashie, a community event is being held by Algoma University and SASA to recognize and promote the campaign.

All members of the community who are interested in learning more are encouraged to attend.

Donations of camping equipment supplies or monetary contributions will be welcomed.

More information on the Walking for the Past, Present and Future Generations of Aboriginal Children campaign is available on the group's Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=32235614384&ref=share
