Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc. in partnership with Great Lakes Honda, is proud to announce the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, happening on May 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Sault Ste. Marie.

The event will begin on the front steps of City Hall, with a speech from the mayor’s office, team registration, shoe pick-up and opening ceremonies.

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event aims to raise awareness towards violence against women and children in our local community. The walk also provides an opportunity to discuss the need for the services provided by our local Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc.

There have been over 7,000 individuals that have accessed these resources within the last year alone. Services include: a 24-hour, 7 days/week accessibility to shelter and support services; long-term and crisis abuse counselling; telephone/walk-in crisis counselling; awareness and education; systemic and individual advocacy; referral services; and safe housing support.

The Walk is expected to see local firefighters, Sault Ste. Marie City police officers, Bikers Rights Organization members as well as many others joining in the fight to end violence toward women and children in Sault Ste. Marie.

“Great Lakes Honda has always been community-oriented. We believe in supporting local organizations such as, Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc., because we recognize the need for these important services in Sault Ste. Marie. Based on the statistics, far too many women and children have accessed these services in the past year. This event will bring together men, women and children in support of a violence-free community and is one that we’re very proud to support!” said Dealer Principal, Francine Floreani.

Team registration for the walk, which includes up to 6 members, is $100 and individual registration is $25.

The team that raises the most money in pledges will win $200 in gift certificates to local businesses and the individual that raises the most money in pledges will receive a $50 gift certificate to local businesses.

The objective of Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc. is to create a community that stands in support of a violence free life for all women and children. All pledges from this event will go towards furthering the work of ending violence against women and children.

After the walk, there will be an awards ceremony, door prizes, activities and food for the entire family. Both men and women are encouraged to participate in the event. Men are asked to literally “walk a mile in her shoes” and therefore must wear red high heels, which will be provided. Women can wear any footwear of choice.
