Volkmar Lauber to speak at Algoma U on renewable power

The Department of Law and Politics at Algoma University is pleased to announce that Dr. Volkmar Lauber will give a guest lecture on Monday, October 5 in the Doc Brown Lounge at 5:30 p.m., titled “Why, For How Long and in What Form Does Renewable Power Need Support.”

Born in Austria in 1944, Dr. Volkmar Lauber is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Salzburg.

He is an expert on climate policy, economic policy, environmental policy, renewable energies, and is a Peak Oil researcher.

He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Vienna, Harvard Law School, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He has taught at the University of South Florida, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and the University of Salzburg.

Lauber’s lecture will begin to answer difficult questions surrounding renewable power.

Is it wise or good to let the market dictate the rate of innovation or advancement? Is energy production best served by private enterprise and competition?

Like other public goods in Canada (such as healthcare), is renewable power something the state should administer, subsidise, or support, either directly or indirectly?

“Now, more than ever, states are having to reconsider (even reconceptualise) renewable energy production. Governments have to ask some tough questions. Professor Lauber’s talk will begin to answer these and related questions, and usefully, situate the whole debate within the renewable and non-renewable power discourse,” said Dr. Neil Cruickshank, Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Law and Politics at Algoma University.
