CBC news is reporting that Via Rail engineers went on strike today as contract negotiations broke down between the rail company and union representatives.

Via's engineers and yardmasters have been working without a collective agreement since December 2006, and are seeking changes in wages, scheduling and benefits.

Stranded passengers will be given refunds on unused Via Rail tickets, but will be forced to find alternate modes of transportation.

Via Rail transports an average of 11,000 passengers daily.
