U.S. Coast Guard warns of deteriorating ice conditions on the Great Lakes

'Ice conditions are always changing and are very difficult to determine' - U.S. Coast Guard Captain Amy Florentino, Deputy Sector Commander

With warmer weather in the forecast for the forseeable future, the United State Coast Guard issued a warning on Thursday afternoon for the public to use caution when it comes to ice conditions in the area.

Warmer temperatures have led to deteriorating ice conditions.

“Ice conditions are always changing and are very difficult to determine,” said Captain Amy Florentino, Deputy Sector Commander in a prepared statement. “In many locations the ice conditions are becoming extremely dangerous, and we urge everyone to heed warnings from local authorities to avoid placing themselves at risk.”
