Mayor Rowswell was on his way to Hamilton last night for surgery today, Acting Mayor Steve Butland told last night's City Council meeting. "You may be wondering why I am sitting in this chair," said Butland (shown). "It's very sad news I have to bring to you."

On Sunday, Mayor Rowswell received word that he was to report to St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton to have his left kidney removed today.

Butland said that about three weeks ago, the mayor had a procedure done at Sault Area Hospital that involved removal of two lumps.

Rowswell appeared to be recovering well, however he was called to Hamilton for more surgery today.

"Our prayers and our thoughts are with the mayor at this time as we hope for his speedy and full recovery," Butland said.

Councillor Butland is to assume the role of acting mayor until Mayor Rowswell's return to the city in a few weeks time.
