************************* Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site recreational lock re-opens

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO - (August 1) – Parks Canada Agency and the City of Sault Ste Marie are pleased to announce that the recreational lock at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site of Canada is back in operation following replacement of all eight of its gate anchors.

The lock will be open to boat traffic for the remainder of the operating season.

Further upgrades have been identified as part of the long-term investment in the sustainability of the recreational lock.

Every effort will be made to implement these upgrades with as little impact on lock operations as possible.

We would like to thank the public and our regular users for their patience.

Operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Labour Day.

From Tuesday, September 8 until Thursday, October 15 the recreational lock will be open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site of Canada is one of 162 national historic sites operated by Parks Canada to protect and present significant examples of our nation’s heritage.

Completed in 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal was the largest lock in the world when it opened and the first to be electrically operated.

The construction of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal marked the completion of an all-Canadian waterway from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior.
