The United Way Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma is focused on poverty related issues in their fundraising campaign this year.

Food security and other essential services are front and centre in its plans, with the donations they receive, all of which stay local.

The full United Way press release is included below.

Because of you, those most in need right now in our community can receive help through programs and funding offered by United Way Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District. The 2022/2023 United Way Campaign has officially launched! Your local United Way needs your help as they continue to focus on the idea of “Better is Possible”.

Jonathan Boyer Nolan, Co-chair of the 2022/2023 campaign says, “poverty is visibly impacting our communities and we understand how it can seem impossible to tackle. Living in Sault Ste. Marie, you can see the problems we’re facing with unemployment, homelessness, hunger, and mental illness. We’re here to tell you that as overwhelming as it seems, it’s not impossible to make a difference. For the cost of a cup of coffee you can directly impact lives right in your own backyard. Because of you, local individuals and families can be given the hope and support they need to thrive.”

The United Way aims to bring our communities together this year to raise funds for their food security and essential services programs in addition to the 75+ partner agencies they support across the Algoma district.

United Way reduces the effects of poverty on local individuals and families by sustaining vital support and essential services that hundreds of people rely on every day. Whether it’s providing hot meals for Salvation Army, filing taxes for low-income seniors, or supporting a student with their education needs, your United Way is here to help.

There are many ways you can give back this year, including running workplace campaigns, signing up for payroll deduction, hosting your own fundraising events, or giving through their website. 100% of your donations always stay local, in your community!

The United Way is excited to announce they have three campaign chairs for this year’s campaign, ensuring fundraising efforts and impact are spread across the whole community. Hilda Odom, Jonathan Boyer Nolan, and David Gearing have all served as directors on the United Way’s board and share a common passion for taking bold action against poverty in our district. Together they are spearheading the 2022/2023 Campaign with the hope of getting more individuals involved in the campaign while educating the public on the work United Way does.

United Way is asking the community to consider donating the gift of giving this campaign season. If you’d like to get involved in any capacity, please contact Rayna Evoy at 705-256-7476 EXT 206 to make a difference today. When people come together, we can accomplish so much more than we ever could alone.
