************************* Failing to stop for police leads to arrest

BLIND RIVER, ON - On October 9, 2010, at 2:45 a.m. while conducting RIDE checks in the area of Hudson Street in Blind River, officers observed a red Honda appear to turn onto a side street to avoid police.

The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the Honda accelerated through the town streets.

After losing sight of the vehicle officers ended the pursuit.

At 3:05 a.m. officers located the vehicle parked in the bush off Schuurm Avenue in Blind River.

A check of the vehicle revealed that is was stolen from Sudbury.

Officers from the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Canine were called to the scene.

A search of the area produced negative results.

On October 11, 2010, while investigating an unrelated incident officers were able to identify and arrest the persons responsible for the earlier pursuit.

A 15-year-old male from Blind River who can not be identified has been charged with the following:

- Theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000, Section 334(a), Criminal Code

- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code

- Flight from police, Section 249.1(1), Criminal Code

- Fail to comply with undertaking, Section 145(3), Criminal Code

- Obstruct peace officer, Section 1299a), Criminal Code

- Fail to comply with sentence disposition, Section 137, Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A 15-year-old male from Sudbury who can not be identified has been charged with the following:

- Theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000, Section 334(a), Criminal Code

- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code

- Flight from police, Section 249.1(1), Criminal Code.

Both youths were held in custody for a bail hearing in Sault Ste. Marie on October 12, 2010.

************************* Owners reminded to lock their vehicles

BLIND RIVER, ON - East Algoma OPP is reminding vehicle owners to lock their vehicles whenever they are unoccupied.

It only takes seconds for a thief to enter your car and take whatever they want.

East Algoma OPP in Blind River have received calls in the past few days from vehicle owners complaining that someone entered their car and stolen items.

In all instances the vehicles were left unlocked and the thefts occurred at night.

The easiest way to protect your property is to keep your vehicle locked.

Just remember to “lock it or lose it.”
