Two forest fires reported near Sault Ste. Marie

Three new fires have been confirmed thus far today in the Northeast Region, two in the Sudbury area and one in the Bancroft area.

Of these newly confirmed fires, SUD 72 is now out, while SUD 71 and BAN 20 remain in a state of not under control, but are receiving suppression support at this time.

Twelve new fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region on July 11.

Sudbury 69 was a 0.1 hectare fire in Sagamok First Nations that is now out.

Sudbury 70 was in the Whitefish area and was 0.1 hectares in size.

The fire is now out.

North Bay 47 is a 0.5 hectare fire in the Lake Temagami area.

Air attack and Helitak responded to the fire.

North Bay 48, a 0.1 hectare in Mattawa was responded to by the municipal fire department as well as the MNR.

The fire is now out.

North Bay 49, near NOR 48 was also 0.1 hectares in size and is now out.

Sault Ste. Marie 28, a 0.7 hectare fire is southwest of Elliot Lake.

The fire was actioned by the waterbomber as well as crews yesterday.

Sault Ste. Marie 29 was a 0.1 hectare fire near Batchawana Bay that is now out.

Chapleau 28, a 0.4 hectare fire near Missinaibi Provincial Park was responded to by Air Attack and Helitak yesterday.

Wawa 23, a 0.3 hectare fire near Lake Superior Provincial Park was responded to by Helitak and Air Attack yesterday.

Hearst 15 was a 0.1 hectare fire south of Nagagami, and is now out.

Algonquin Park fires 8 and 9 were both 0.1 hectares in size and are now out.

As the hazard is high to extreme across the region, a reminder to the public to use extreme care and caution in all outdoor activities during this high hazard time.

The MNR does not currently have a Restricted Fire Zone in place, however many municipalities do.

If you are contemplating the use of a campfire, please check with your local municipality for restrictions they may have in place.

There are currently 20 fires in the Northeast Region, burning 48,105.4 hectares.

To date, there have been 376 fires in the Northeast Region, having burnt 49,678.2 hectares.
