Two drivers clocked over 140 km/h on Hwy 17

WAWA (July 6) - On July 1, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. officers had occasion to stop a southbound Toyota Tundra on Highway 17 approximately 10 kilometres north of Wawa in Bailloquet Township.

The vehicle entered radar at a speed of 145 kilometres per hour in a posted 90 kilometre zone.

The vehicle was subsequently stopped and the driver, Shamsher Hooda, age 40 of Mississauga, Ontario was charged with operating a motor vehicle while performing a stunt contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days along with his Ontario driver’s licence.

He is scheduled to appear in traffic court on September 17, 2009 to answer to the charge.

Again on July 4, 2009, officers were patrolling Highway 17, Lalibert Township approximately 32 kilometres north of Wawa.

A southbound blue Pontiac Grand Am entered radar at a speed of 147 kilometres per hour in a posted 90 kilometre zone.

Officers stopped the vehicle driven by a female.

As a result of investigation, Rhonda Scavarelli, age 38 years of Thunder Bay, Ontario stands charged with operating a motor vehicle while performing a stunt, as well as operating a motor vehicle with no currently validated permit.

The driver’s vehicle was impounded for a seven day period and her Ontario driver’s licence was suspended for seven days.

She will appear in court on September 17, 2009 in Wawa.

************************* Three-day license suspension

WAWA - On July 3, 2009, officers were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 651 near Missanabie, Ontario.

A Ford pickup truck was checked and the female driver was found to have an odour of alcohol on her breath.

As a result of a breath test Janice Souliere , age 48 of Missanabie, Ontario had her Ontario driver’s licence suspended for three days.

RIDE - Several RIDE checks were conducted throughout the Superior East patrol area resulting in several vehicles being checked.
