Two drivers charged with impaired near Wawa

Two impaired drivers charged

WAWA - On April 8, 2013 at approximately 5 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Wawa Detachment were patrolling the area.

A silver car was observed weaving within its lane as the driver entered onto Highway 101 from Highway 17. 

The OPP stopped the car and after conducting further investigation, concluded the driver was impaired by alcohol.

As a result 57-year-old France Duclos of Wawa was arrested and charged with the following offences;

  • Impaired operation
  • Refuse to provide breath sample

The accused is schedule to appear in Wawa Criminal Court in May.

Just two days later on April 10, 2013 the Wawa OPP were conducting radar patrol of Highway 17 north of Wawa at 5:15 p.m. 

Near the Steephill Dam Road a black pickup truck was found travelling in excess of 150 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. 

Once the vehicle was stopped the officer observed an open can of beer in the cup holder of the vehicle. 

During this time a complaint from a local highway construction crew reported that a black pickup had driven dangerously through their construction area. 

OPP determined that the pickups were one in the same.

The driver, 22-year-old Russ Schmitz of Spanish River, was arrested and charged with the following offences;

  • Impaired operation
  • Dangerous operation
  • Exceed 80 milligrams blood alcohol content
  • Stunt driving - Exceed speed limit by more than 50 km/h

The accused is scheduled to appear in both Wawa Criminal Court and Provincial Court in June.
