************************* Two animal collision over the weekend
No injuries
GARDEN RIVER FIRST NATION, ON - Two separate motor vehicle collisions over the weekend were reported on Highway 17 East over the weekend involving animals.
In one collision on November 13, 2010, at 7p.m. a deer was hit and the mini-van received extensive damage and had to be towed.
In another collision on November 14, 2010, at 10:00 p.m. a vehicle struck a bear.
There were no injuries to any of the drivers or passengers.
Sault Ste. Marie OPP remind motorists that with the changing weather and road conditions driver’s must be alert with regards to wildlife on the highways.
Visibility is greatly reduced at night and so is a driver’s reaction time.
Drive cautiously through areas identified as high risk by wildlife crossing signs.
Always slow down when passing wildlife, it may suddenly jump into your lane.
Don’t assume the animal will move out of our way, most freeze in a vehicle’s headlights.
Wildlife collisions most frequently occur between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight.
