NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE
POLICE SERVICE

*************************
If you have ever wondered what a typical Friday night looks like for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, you can now find out from the comforts of home.

On Friday August 29, 2014 Staff Sergeant Martynuck from the Community Relations and Crime Prevention Office will tweet and post calls for service as they are happening on the police Twitter and Facebook page.

The posts on Twitter and Facebook will take place between 7 pm and 3 am on August 29 and will be a brief summary of the calls for service the officers are dispatched to as well as those they come across such as traffic enforcement calls.

No specific details will be posted to protect all involved parties.

For many years, people listened to scanners to see what the police were doing.

With the evolution to encrypted radio the public lost that window into the police world.

Social media is a way for the Service to be transparent and accountable to the community and this allows the public insight into a typical night shift.

The goal is to give the public a sense of the volume of calls the SSMPS handles.

On average during a weekday the Service responds to 80 calls during a 24 hour period.

On a weekend the calls for Service can go as high as 120 for a 24-hour period.

The Twitter account to follow is @SaultPolice and Facebook is facebook.com/ssmpolice.
