After travelling more than 7,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean from this morning's 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile, dangerous tsunami waves are hitting Hawaii.

The first waves arrived about one hour ago but were too small to be discernible.

The waves are draining harbours, followed by a surges of six to eight feet of water driving back into the harbours and up the beaches.

This pattern is expected to continue for up to eight to 10 hours tonight, with the surges possibly gaining strength.

People could be returning to their homes within six to eight hours, depending on the strength of the waves.

Reports indicate that an evacuation of low-lying areas was calm, orderly and effective.

The death toll is expected to be low but property damage could be significant.
