Trump, Clinton "scare" Rambo (5 photos)

A sampling of Sault, Michigan voter opinion as U.S. presidential election approaches

It has been the most controversial U.S. presidential election campaign in years, possibly decades.

Looking at the two main parties, perplexed American voters must choose between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, a real estate tycoon and TV reality show star who has added to an already-notorious reputation by making blunt comments about ethnic minorities and women, and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former First Lady, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State, who, despite political experience, finds herself battling claims she is untrustworthy and, well, just plain unlikeable.

More than a few diehard Republicans and Democrats are openly unhappy with Trump and Clinton.

Some voters may stay away from the ballot box altogether, while others may go with a third party or independent candidate.

SooToday visited a Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan shopping centre Tuesday and spoke to some everyday, hard-working American voters to get a sampling of how they are leaning as the presidential election approaches.

We were met with a variety of responses.

"Clinton," said a lady who identified herself as Penny from Marquette, Michigan.

"Part of me thinks Clinton has the foreign policy for it, but there are a lot of things I don't like about her…I need to know more about Benghazi and the email thing, I have to find out more, I'm still weighing it up."

Clinton, during her stint as President Barack Obama's Secretary of State, was criticized for not providing adequate security after J. Christopher Stevens, U.S. ambassador to Libya, was killed by Islamic militants in an attack in Benghazi, Libya September 11, 2012.

Clinton has also come under considerable fire for using her private email server for official communications, some of which have been marked classified.

"I like Trump…people are coming into the United States without doing it the right way (referring to illegal immigration), and he wants to see it done the right way, and that's the way I like it too," said Penny's husband Ron.

Trump has spoken out against illegal immigration from Mexico and elsewhere.

"I don't trust Hillary and I think Trump is a big bag of wind," said Ed Kaiser, visiting from Columbia, Missouri, who plans on voting for Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson.

"I can't help but feel both main parties have abandoned us…I'm pro-choice and that goes against Republicans and I don't like the sense of entitlement in society."

"I'm sure as hell not voting for Hillary, give a woman power it goes to their head," said George McClellan of Rudyard, Michigan, who said he would vote for Trump or an independent candidate.

"Hillary," said Tom Moore of Pickford, Michigan.

"I won't vote for Trump because he asked (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to hack into the Democratic National Committee to get into Hillary's emails (which Trump, in his own inimitable way, did at a news conference July 27)."

"Right now, neither one of them are convincing me I need to vote for them, I'm very undecided," said Char McCready.

Referring to Trump, McCready said "I don't like the way he's acting and calling people names, that's childish."

"Hillary has some good points, her husband (former President Bill Clinton) had excellent points, we had a wonderful world when he was in…we had money, we had jobs, we had everything, but after him it just went downhill and it's been going downhill ever since."

"If she lets him guide her a little bit it might be a good thing, but I'm still undecided."

"I'm definitely leaning towards Hillary Clinton," said Tom Gentry, an Oklahoma native now living in Sault, Michigan.

"I don't think the nation needs a leader like Donald Trump, even though Hillary Clinton does have her definite slip-ups…the author of Trump's biography, Trump: The Art of the Deal, came out and said Donald Trump basically manipulated everything in the book.

"I just think Donald Trump is a pathological liar, I think he's a bit of a sociopath to be honest with you."

"I'm going to vote for Trump," said a man identifying himself as Don of Menominee, Michigan, without hesitation.

"I'm a hunter, I like target shooting and stuff like that, and Hillary's 100 percent anti-gun and that's the number one reason why I won't vote for her."

"What's she going to do when she gets more control?"

"He's more for the American citizen," said Don's wife Jackie.

"I am undecided…I'm actually going to listen to the Libertarian people who are on the ballot," said Greg Rambo.

"Trump scares me because he might do too much and Clinton scares me because she's status quo."

"Voting Libertarian might be making a statement, just to say the main parties have to figure out how to get better at what they do, because they sure aren't doing a good job right now," Rambo said.

U.S. voters will pick a new president November 8.
