Transgender flag rises at city hall for first time (9 photos)

To honour the city’s inaugural Trans Day of Remembrance, members of the Sault Pride Community and their loved ones gathered at city hall for the raising of the transgender flag

It’s a historic day for the Sault Pride Community.

2SLGBTQIA+ community members and their loved ones came together at city hall on Sunday for the raising of the transgender flag – a first for Sault Ste. Marie.

The flag was designed by American trans woman Monica Helms in 1999 and features five horizontal stripes of three colours: light blue, pink, and white.

Prior to Sunday’s ceremony, out-going mayor Christian Provenzano had recently proclaimed Nov. 20, 2022 as ‘Trans Day of Remembrance’ in Sault Ste. Marie, a day that’s recognized across the world for those who have been lost to transphobic violence.

Participants offered speeches, poems, and words of reflection for transgender folks near and far in celebration of their contributions to the community while advocating for their rights and freedoms.

Mayor Matthew Shoemaker was joined by several city councillors for Sunday’s big day as he took part in his first flag raising as mayor.

Following the ceremony, attendees headed to Scott Coffee Co. for refreshments and a social.
