Trades Day of Caring has returned

The Trades Day of Caring is set to return later this month.

Sault College and the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District announced this morning that the event is set for Oct. 22.

The program was last held in 2019.

The day gives Sault College students an opportunity to help area seniors with minor household repairs and maintenance ahead of the winter months.

Students will work under the guidance of Sault College instructors.

Potential projects include window caulking, weather stripping, sealing windows for the winter, and similar items, as well as outdoor maintenance such as raking and collecting leaves, ensuring exterior faucets are turned off, and hoses are wrapped and put away for winter.

“This annual event has helped countless individuals in our community for many years, and we are excited to be able to bring it back post pandemic,” said Marc Pilon, P.Eng, professor/coordinator of civil engineering and construction at Sault College. “Trades Day of Caring allows students to take their learning and skills and use them to help those in need in our community. It is a heartwarming experience for students and participants alike and we are honoured to work together with the United Way to make this event happen.”

Any seniors in the Sault area interested in participating can contact the United Way at (705) 256-7476, ext. 0 no later than Oct. 14.

Applicants will be approved based on need and on a first come, first serve basis.
