Trade committee to study steel dumping

OTTAWA – The Standing Committee on International Trade will study unfair trade practices impacting Canada’s steel industry thanks to a motion introduced by NDP trade critic, Tracey Ramsey (Essex).

“Canada’s steel industry is too important for the federal government to ignore. They must do more to support Canadian steel producers, including by addressing unfair trade practices like Chinese dumping,” said Ramsey, who is Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on International Trade and the only NDP member of the committee. “I’m pleased the committee will now study this issue. It’s an important first step that must lead to action.”

Last month, the Chambers of Commerce for Windsor-Essex, Hamilton and Sault Ste. Marie co-sponsored a resolution on steel, which was adopted by Chambers across the country, calling on the federal government to address steel dumping.

The text of the motion adopted by the trade committee reads as follows:

That the Standing Committee on International Trade undertake a study of factors, including unfair dumping practices, that are impacting the ability of Canada’s steel industry to compete internationally; that the study consist of at least four meetings; and that the Committee report its findings to the House.
