NEWS RELEASE FROM SAULT MP TONY MARTIN
********************** Martin votes against gun registry
OTTAWA – Sault MP Tony Martin voted Thursday against supporting any new funding for the present gun registry.
A special vote was held in the House of Commons on Thursday night over withholding a requested $82 million in new funding for the controversial gun registry.
The Liberal government supported by the Bloc Quebecois defeated the motion 191-102.
"I support gun control but this gun registry has never paid any attention to the northern and rural culture in my and other ridings," Martin said.
"There has never been another piece of legislation in Canadian history that has done more to divide rural from urban Canadians. This program has been unnecessarily onerous on rural Canadians."
Martin says that, like more northern residents, he does not oppose safe firearms requirements or stricter licensing requirements.
Regrettably, the gun registry which police in larger urban centres has found useful has frustrated and alienated average citizens and has led to a growing mistrust of government in rural parts of the country.
