SAULT STE. MARIE – Federal funding for a community and outreach liaison officer and two summer students will boost programs for the Sault Ste. Marie Arts Council.

A $27,500 12-month FedNor internship staffed by Rob Majury as Community & Outreach Liaison officer will help promote an American Wind Symphony Orchestra event scheduled for July 21-23 at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion as well as an International Art Exchange Program, Safe Spaces Initiative and membership campaign.

"This is a good investment for our arts community and help for an Arts Council that plays an important role in making sure our arts and culture community thrives here," said Sault MP Tony Martin.

"The Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie is so appreciative of the grants we received from the federal government. With the help of the FedNor grants we were able to hire Rob Majury an intern with us for a year to promote the artist programs of the Arts Council to the community. The special program of our American Water Symphony Orchestra concert highlighting our 50th anniversary is made possible through the Canada Summer Jobs as is our Art in the Park and Art in the Parking Lot summer programs," Said Sandra Houston, executive director.

Majury will help organize various high profile community programs which support the Arts Council's efforts in expanding arts involvement.

He will promote the role of the Arts Council and its events to the community to groups including artists, community associations, seniors and churches.

The Arts Council also received funding for two summer students under HRSDC’s Canada Summer Jobs.

Earlier, Martin announced $384,000 in federal funding to create 161 summer jobs for close to 100 projects, including 40 in the district.
