Three wildfires burning in Northeast Region of Ontario

The fire hazard is high in the areas of Sudbury, Espanola, Temagami, and Temiskaming Shores

There are now three active wildland fires in the Northeast Region of Ontario with nothing new confirmed by the late afternoon today.

One of the three active fires, Sudbury 10, is under control; the other two fires, North Bay 5 and Timmins 3, are not.

The fire hazard is low to moderate across the majority of the region, with a high fire hazard is the areas of Sudbury, Espanola, Temagami, and Temiskaming Shores.

Northeast Region   

There are three active wildland fires in the Northeast Region:

North Bay 5 (NOR005) is 134-hectare fire located three kilometres southeast of the community of Cobalt near the east shore of Kerr Lake. Eight FireRanger crews are committed to the fire. It is currently not under control. Aerial suppression is available if required. Helicopter bucketing operations took place this morning. Please remain clear of the area to ensure the safety of the public and emergency personnel.
Timmins 3 (TIM003) is located at the southeast corner of Lower Opikinimika Lake. This 10.7-hectare fire is not under control. There are four crews committed to the fire.
Sudbury 10 (SUD010) is a 6.5-hectare fire located 6 kilometres east of Nairn Centre on the south shore of the Spanish River. This fire is under control.

There were no new wildland fires confirmed in the Northeast Region by the late afternoon of May 24.

The fire hazard is low to moderate across the majority of the Northeast Region, with a high fire hazard is the areas of Sudbury, Espanola, Temagami, and Temiskaming Shores.

Follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning. In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.

Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and are to be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site. Know the rules for safe outdoor burning; consult the full set of Outdoor Burning Regulations.
