SAULT STE. MARIE MUSEUM

**************************** Local military memories - Veterans’ Week 2009

With Veterans’ Week (November 5-11) beginning today across Canada, the Sault Ste. Marie Museum invites members of the community to visit its permanent Military Memories Gallery.

“Displayed items include uniforms, medals, photos, and dioramas,” said the museum’s curator, Kim Forbes. “In addition, a DVD presentation overviews a long and distinguished military history here. That heritage goes back over 150 years to the establishment of a volunteer militia by Major Joseph Wilson (shown) in 1865.”

Forbes said museum visitors are often especially interested in reading names they recognize in complied lists of those who have answered the call in different periods.

“The veterans of Sault Ste. Marie and vicinity have served in both World Wars and the Korean War. Armed services personnel from our area have also participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions in different parts of the world and are currently serving in Afghanistan.”

Forbes noted that the museum will be open on November 11 for those who may wish to visit the Military Memories Gallery following the Remembrance Day service at the Essar Centre.
