Thieves suffer massive sweet tooth, steal almost 400 litres of ice cream

They also stole fudge, pop, and stuffed animals
Big Moose Ice Cream Parlour

The Big Moose Ice Cream Parlour, located at the Chippewa Trading Post on Great Northern Road, was the victim of a break and enter sometime over night Tuesday, owner Susan Koprash told SooToday.

Culprits gained entry to the shop through a window and made off with cash, breaking two cash registers in the process and stealing an entire safe.

But it seems whoever broke in must have suffered from one doozy of a sweet tooth.

Koprash said thieves also absconded with 34 11.4-litre tubs of ice cream, the shop’s entire selection of fudge and fudge products, and every single can of pop and whipped cream in the place.

They also cleaned out all of the stuffed animals, including an extensive collection of Ty Warner Beanie Babies.

“I have no idea why,” Koprash said.

She believes in order for the culprits to pull off such a heist, they had to have used a truck.

She also suspects they were spooked off before the task was complete – a number of tubs of ice cream where left melting inside and outside the shop, creating a huge mess for she and her staff to clean up.

“It took hours to clean up,” she said.

Koprash estimates the total in damages and stolen product to be $9,500.

“It’s so bizarre and hurtful,” she told us. “Families love to come here and this never should have happened.”

Anyone with information about this theft is encouraged to contact Sault Ste. Marie Police Services or Crime Stoppers.
