These smiling faces are next year's ADSB student trustees

The Algoma District School Board approved the appointment of three student trustees for the 2019/2020 school year: Isabella DiBerardino from Korah Collegiate and Leah Moggy from Superior Heights as the student trustees and Marek McLeod from Superior Heights as Indigenous Student Trustee, for the Algoma District School Board, effective Aug. 1, 2019.

Leah Moggy is currently a grade 11 student at Superior Heights. She has been on the honour roll since Grade 9, excelling in all subject areas and has been a visible presence at school events. She has been part of the Student Senate Team for several years.

This year, Leah took on a more significant leadership role on Student Senate, organizing and running an event at Superior Heights called The S Factor – a talent show which allowed all students to showcase their talents and skills. Leah also researched, wrote and successfully secured a SpeakUp Grant for this event.

Leah is an active member of the Steelhawks Student Council, Link Crew, Rotary Interact Club and most recently, has become a team captain for the Superior Heights’ first ever Relay for Life event.   For three years, Leah has scored and timed Superior Heights volleyball games including City Final Four volleyball championships and two NOSSA championships.

Leah’s goals as Student Trustee include a continued focus on student mental and physical well-being and an improved focus on environmental cleanliness within our schools.

Isabella DiBerardino is currently a Grade 11 student enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Korah Collegiate. She has been a member of Student Senate at the school and is an executive member and minute taker for the Korah Colt’s Cabinet.

Isabella plays an important role in promoting, maintaining and organizing the school’s Colt’s Closet, a space in the school designed to provide articles of clothing, personal hygiene products and school supplies to those students who may need them.

This year, Korah’s Student Senate has undertaken a revamp of murals painted on walls around the school. Isabella has been a part of this initiative, helping to preserve the current murals through a photo montage while moving forward with new designs promoting positive character.

Isabella has been a dancer with Studio Dance Arts for 12 years. This year, she choreographed three dance numbers in Korah’s The Little Mermaid production. Isabella is the co-chair of Korah’s Relay for Life event, an event she has been part of for three years.

Isabella hopes to continue to make a difference for students through Student Senate and for the broader community through her ongoing work on Relay for Life.

Marek McLeod is a Grade 11 student at Superior Heights Collegiate and Vocational School. He currently serves on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) for the city of Sault Ste. Marie. He was the former Inaugural Treasurer of Superior Heights Rotary Interact Club and is still active within the club.  

Marek is the current vice-chair of the ADSB Northern Indigenous Youth Council (NIYC) and will be the ADSB Indigenous Student Trustee and NIYC chair for the 2019-2020 school year. Marek has participated in all NIYC leadership forums, and in leadership forums that predated the NIYC. He has spoken to trustees on behalf of Indigenous students after the first ADSB Indigenous Student Leadership Forum in May 2018, and has represented Indigenous student voice at multiple meetings of the ADSB Indigenous Education Advisory Council.

Marek is also involved in the upcoming Superior Heights production of Mamma Mia. He is registered with Thessalon First Nation and has been involved with his culture his entire life.

His goals as Indigenous Student Trustee are to give Indigenous students across the ADSB more of a voice and to bring more reconciliation to our schools by providing students with a safe, welcoming cultural space for everyone.

Current Student Trustees Sarah Fisher and Molly Taylor along with Indigenous Student Trustee Katelyn Wildgoose will complete their terms on July 31, 2019.
