SooToday.com has received the following note from Kathie Brosemer, who describes herself "as one of Bernadette Merritt's cello students busking for the music camp."

Read on for the explanation.

************************* On Saturday, December 22, there will be a possibility of a rare sighting in Sault Ste. Marie.

Five cello players - four of them students of Bernadette Merritt of the Algoma Conservatory - will play Christmas carols to entertain shoppers in the Cambrian Mall.

Ms. Merritt is a well-loved teacher with her adult and youth cellists.

She will lead the quintet, including two adult and two young cello students, in a selection of crowd-pleasers from traditional and modern Christmas music, as well as selections from the musical The Sound of Music.

The performance will raise money for the Algoma Music Camp, a pet project of Ms. Merritt and her students.

A cello case will be open to receive donations to the camp, which will support much-needed renovations to the old barn used for teaching and for performances.

Catch these rare birds from 1 to 3 p.m. in the food court of the Cambrian Mall.

An additional benefit performance will take place on Sunday at the Station Mall.

A string quartet including Ms. Merritt on cello, Raymond Schryer and Vanessa Mio on violin, and Nancy Logan on viola will play more advanced works starting at 4 p.m.
