NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN
*************************
SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. - In an effort to make Automatic External Defibrillators more available throughout city structures and recreational sites, a joint project between the City of Sault Ste. Marie Parks and Rec. and City Fire Department resulted in a brand new AED being purchased and installed on the 8th Street wall of the Gerrish field restroom, centrally located within the City’s Malcolm Park Ballfield Complex.

The AED installed in the weatherproof enclosure is fully compatible with all City Ambulance heart monitor/defibrillators. The AED will be available for emergency use while the Malcolm Ballfield Complex is open for regular use. The AED and its enclosure will be removed during the off season to prevent theft or other malicious activity.

Users of the AED in an emergency should be advised that when the AED storage enclosure is opened, a siren will sound, and a strobe light will activate notifying those around that additional medical help is needed, and to call 911 for assistance.

According to a 2018 study by the American Heart Association, survival from cardiac arrest doubled when bystanders stepped in to use a publicly-available automated external defibrillator rather than waiting until emergency responders arrived.

Although licensing and/or certification are not required to operate an AED or perform CPR, training for such a medical emergency may be sought through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

The AED is located on the 8th Street side of the Gerrish ball field restroom and will be available while all Malcolm Ballfields are open for use.
