Winter placement of refuse and recycling materials

The Sault Ste. Marie Public Works and Transportation Department reminds residents to place refuse and recycling containers at ground level to facilitate proper collection.

Place bags/containers on the ground as close as possible to the roadway, but not on the sidewalk, travelled roadway or on top of snowbanks.

Materials placed on top of or behind snowbanks can be difficult to access, and may create a hazard.

Collection workers will not climb up or over snowbanks to retrieve refuse or recyclables, which will result in materials not being collected.

Residents are responsible for the proper disposal of materials rejected or left due to by-law infractions.

During heavy snowfalls, waste materials should be set back from the curb approximately three feet.

This requirement helps prevent waste materials from being knocked over or buried during snow clearing operations.

Refuse and recycling containers should not be placed out for pickup previous to 7 p.m. the evening before your collection day.

All materials must be curbside by 7:30 a.m. to ensure collection.

For additional information, please contact the Public Works and Transportation Department at 705-759-5201 or visit the City website - Search 'refuse collection'.
