The new Pino's is taking shape (4 photos)

It's been nearly a year since the old gas station was demolished and construction started on the new Pino's Get Fresh Foods store.

Things are starting to look very grocery-store like.

From the sidewalk on Trunk Road, much activity can be seen at the site of the new store, located smack in the middle of where a street used to be, beside the original and still-very-busy Pino's.

Since store owner Ben Pino began work on the new store, the global economy has slumped and Wal-Mart announced plans for grocery expansion of its own in the Sault.

last September, Pino sent his lawyer Ira Kagan to City Council to try and delay Wal-Mart's expansion by blocking the discount store's rezoning application.

He didn't succeed.

But things are still hopping at Pino's, if the number of vehicles in the parking lot are any indication.

And, there's been no word from Wal-Mart about when its planned expansion will start.
