The gunman who opened fire on people in a movie theatre at a military base in Fort Hood was an army psychiatrist.

Earlier today 12 people were killed and at least 31 wounded when Major Nadal Malik Hasan, a single, 39 year-old psychiatrist, opened fire on soldiers at Fort Hood, a US military base in Killeen, Texas.

He was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington until he had a bad review and was transfered to Fort Hood.

In early reports Hasan was said to be among the dead but by 21:25 it was reported Hasan was injured but alive and in custody.

Initial reports indicated that two other suspects in the shootings were apprehended and placed in custody.

Some media reports indicate those two soldiers were questioned and released others indicate their status is unknown.
