Telephone scam reported to Sault police

************************** The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has just recently received three reports of attempted telephone scams.

In the scams, elderly residents are targeted to send money to a grandson/ granddaughter.

The caller identifies himself/ herself as a grandchild that has been arrested out of town and requires money to get bailed out of jail.

In the scams the callers are well informed and have a lot of personal information about the potential victim.

If you or anyone you know receives a call, from a relative, requiring money to be bailed out of jail take the following steps:

- Get the caller to give you a contact phone number.

- Contact your local police service.

- Relay the information to the police.

- Let the police do a follow-up to confirm the situation.

- Your local police service will advise you what actions you should take after confirming the call.

- Do not send any money and or cheques.
