***************************** New fire arrivals were lower today as a result of lighter winds and higher humidity.

As of last night eight new fires had been reported, all in the Northwest Region.

This brings the total to 128 fires currently burning.

Successful initial attack by fire crews and aircraft kept new fires small and no further problems are anticipated from these new occurrences.

More lightning fires are expected to be detected throughout the weekend.

Progress continues on fires near communities in the far north with over 2000 fire personnel and over 100 aircraft continuing to work on these forest fires.

Firefighting resources from out of province continue to assist Ontario’s efforts.

New fires

No fires were reported on Saturday, August 6.

Four new fires were reported by the evening of August 7 in Haliburton (1) and Cochrane (3) districts.

All the Cochrane fires are located soutwest of James Bay and are being observed.

No issues are anticipated with these fires.

- Parry Sound 10 - lightning caused - not under control - 0.1 hectares - in Grundy Lake Provincial Park

- Cochrane 20 - lightning caused - 8.0 hectares Cochrane 21 - lightning caused - 40.0 hectares

- Cochrane 22 - lightning caused - 50.0 hectares

Active fires

There are an additional five active fires in the region.

- Cochrane 6 - lightning caused - being observed - 500.0 hectares - 63 kilometers southwest of Kashechewan

- Cochrane 13 - lightning caused - being observed - 600.0 hectares - 30 kilometres southeast of Peawanuck

- Cochrane 15 - lightning caused - being observed - 50.0 hectares - west of Attawapiskat

- Cochrane 17 - lightning caused - being observed - 200.0 hectares - 43 kilometers southwest of Fort Albany

- Cochrane 18 - lightning caused - being observed - 8.0 hectares - 44 kilometers south of Fort Albany

The fire hazard is moderate throughout the region, with pockets rising to high in the south.
