NEWS RELEASE

CONGRESSMAN BART STUPAK 1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF MICHIGAN

************************* Online contributions result in possible breach of personal information

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) is cautioning individuals who are considering making online contributions to the website exposeobama.com that it appears the site has sent out the personal information of at least 139 individuals from 40 states following their donation.

Stupak’s office has received faxes from the site on behalf of donors containing the following information: name, mailing address, e-mail address, computer IP number, full credit card number, credit card expiration date, three-digit card security code, employer and amount of donation made to the site.

“This apparent breach of personal information could easily lead to these individuals falling victim to identity theft if placed in the wrong hands,” Stupak said. “I am concerned that if the exposeobama.com web site is sending this critical information to my congressional office, they may also be sending it to others, further compromising the identities of these 139 individuals.”

Stupak sent letters to all of the individuals involved alerting them to the situation, providing the fax, and encouraging them to check their credit reports to monitor if their information is being used inappropriately.

Stupak also sent a letter to Floyd Brown, who is listed as editor of the exposeobama.com website, informing him of the faxes and providing him with the names and addresses of individuals whose information was compromised.

Faxes containing personal information came from individuals across the country including: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
