OPP NEWS RELEASE

************************* Motorist charged under new street racing legislation

On Thursday, October 18, at approximately 11:30 a.m. a member of the Superior East Detachment was conducting patrol of Hwy 17 approximately 25 km south of White River.

The officer had occasion to intercept a vehicle traveling at an excessive rate of speed.

As a result of this traffic investigation a 35-year-old driver from Manitoba has been charged under the new Highway Traffic Act street racing legislation with “operate a motor vehicle on a highway, while performing a stunt: 153 kph in a posted 90 kph zone” - 63 Km over the posted speed limit!

As a result of this, the vehicle has been towed and impounded for seven days.

The operator’s driver’s license has also been seized and suspended for seven days, and he will have to attend court in Wawa this December.

The Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind motorists that we are committed to targeting and reducing aggressive driving behavior.

This type of excess represents one of the major causal factors in fatal and serious injury collisions in our province.
