************************* The end of the school year is here and it’s time to start thinking about summer safety.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to remind everyone of safety messages to help ensure that everyone has a safe and fun summer.

For drivers

- Please remain vigilant throughout the rest of the summer, keeping an eye out for children who will be in a variety of areas that they have not been in normally during the school.

- Slow down, obey the rules of the road and be aware of additional pedestrian and cyclist traffic

For children

- Look in all directions before crossing the street and cross only at marked crosswalks or intersections.

- Wait for walk signal if there is one.

- If you are on a bike, walk it across the street/crosswalk/intersection.

- Walk with others whenever possible and do not talk to strangers or accept rides from people without your parent’s permission.

- Wear all safety equipment, including a helmet when riding your bike.

For parents

Parents should review street-proofing with their children and remind them of the play safe rules for the summer, including: - Wearing all safety equipment, including a helmet when riding a bicycle.

- Look all ways when crossing the street.

- Educate your children about "who is a stranger."

- Teach children how to handle stranger encounters to increase their safety.

- Maintain a 'buddy system' when playing or walking home, safety in numbers.

- If spending more time on the Internet - cyberproof your children.

- Parents should remain informed of events of your children's everyday lives.

Water safety

- Never leave your children unattended around water.

- Enroll your children in swimming lessons from an early age.

- Learn CPR and first aid.

- Always wear a lifejacket when boating.

- Keep small children within arm’s length around water.

On behalf of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, enjoy our great summer and above all be safe. Our children's safety is paramount.
