Youth are our future: Stop the violence

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Services will be hosting the 27th annual Crime Prevention Seminar on Friday the 29th of October.

For 27 years now, Police Services across the District of Algoma and some of the local service clubs have sponsored this one-day event.

This year’s seminar, entitled Youth are our future: Stop the violence, will be focusing on youth crime and youth violence.

Among young people, the violent crime rate increased 12 percent during the past decade, and since 1991, it has risen 30 percent.

By 2008, youth accused of violent offences accounted for nearly one-quarter of all apprehended youth. This is an enormous area of concern in our society today.

Our keynote speaker this year is Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman.

Lt. Col. Grossman is an internationally recognized scholar, author, soldier, and speaker who is one of the world's foremost experts in the field of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman was a West Point psychology professor, professor of military science, and an army ranger who is the author of On Combat, Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill and On Killing (which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize).

Col. Grossman’s research was cited by the president of the United States in a national address, and he has testified before the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Congress, and numerous state legislatures.

He was involved in counselling, recovery and court cases in the aftermath of the Jonesboro, Paducah, Springfield, and Littleton school massacres.

He wrote the entry on Aggression and Violence in the Oxford Companion to American Military History, three entries in the Academic Press Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace and Conflict and has presented papers before the national conventions of the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Today he is the director of the Killology Research Group, and in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks he is has written and spoken extensively on the terrorist threat, with articles published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Civil Policy and many leading law enforcement journals, and he has been on the road almost 300 days a year, training elite military and law enforcement organizations worldwide about the reality of combat.

The one-day event is scheduled to take place at the Marconi Club.

The seminar will start at 8:45 a.m. sharp and conclude at approximately 4 p.m.

Members of the public are invited.

The cost of the seminar is $30 which includes a buffet lunch.

You must be registered to attend.

The registration deadline is this Friday the 22nd of October at 3 p.m.
