Stephen Harper gets by. With a little help from his friends

Prime Minister Stephen Harper stunned the audience last night at a National Arts Centre Gala in Ottawa with an uncharacteristic show of light-hearted musical talent.

Not only did Harper take a seat at the grand piano and tinkle the ivories like a pro, he sang lead vocals as famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, along with two guitar players and a drummer, accompanied him for a performance of the Beatles' With a Little Help From My Friends.

The concert was in support of the National Youth and Education Trust, and Harper's surprise performance received a standing ovation.

His participation at the gala comes in sharp contrast to comments the Prime Minister made last year regarding events of this sort.

"I think when ordinary working people come home, turn on the TV and see … a bunch of people … at a rich gala, all subsidized by taxpayers, claiming their subsidies aren't high enough when they know those subsidies have actually gone up, I'm not sure that's something that resonates with ordinary people."
