Station Mall promises 'exciting announcements' coming soon

A recent social media post from downtown mall points to big changes at the former Sears location, but Station Mall management remains tight-lipped on details

The owners of Station Mall are staying tight-lipped about what's in store for the old Sears location.

As SooToday reported last week, mall management posted a bit of a teaser on its Facebook page that pointed to ongoing construction on the roof.

“Something exciting is happening at Station Mall!” the post reads. “If you've noticed the blocked-off area in the parking lot near the old Sears location, you're in for a surprise. Big changes are underway. Stay tuned for more updates!”

Is a new tenant imminent? SooToday reached out to Cushman & Wakefield, the mall's property manager, for more details.

The company finally responded today with a brief email — but offered no new details on what's next for the old Sears location.

"Station Mall is currently conducting a full roof replacement and upgrades to the existing HVAC systems, but look for exciting announcements for centre in the near future," wrote Sanchia Saha, digital manager at Cushman & Wakefield.

For the past several weeks, construction crews have been working in and around the building, with lots of attention focused on the rooftop, which is undergoing a $700,000 face-lift. The parking lot to the side of the former Sears store is also completely blocked off.

Closed since October 2017, Sears was in operation at the Station Mall for 43 years.

As SooToday first reported last July, the mall was sold to a Markham-based company for $30-million ($12-million in cash, and an $18-million mortgage to be paid back to the seller, Algoma Central Corporation).
