Marking 25th anniversary, Dramatic Film recounts Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope

Shawn Ashmore as Terry Fox embraces the spirit and character of a Canadian Hero

Toronto, ON - On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox set out on a marathon of hope to raise money for cancer research; by the end of the run, he managed to raise the spirit of an entire nation.

TERRY is his story.

A testament to the notion that one person can make a difference in the world, Fox's heroic Marathon of Hope journey is retold in CTV's Original Movie, TERRY, premiering Sunday, September 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. ET and in High Definition on CTV HD East and CTV HD West (check local listings).

The two-hour film, which recounts Terry's 3,339 mile run, stars Canadian actor Shawn Ashmore (X2: X-Men United) with a performance that encapsulates the spirit of Terry Fox.

The September 11 broadcast is timely as it highlights Terry Fox's remarkable story just as schools across Canada prepare to mark the 25th Anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope on September 16 with The National School Run Day.

In addition, Canada and countries around the world will honour his memory as they participate in Terry Fox Runs this September.

Based on personal journals and interviews with family and friends, TERRY sheds light on the hardships and triumphs Terry Fox experienced while he ran a marathon a day, every day, for 143 days.

With his best friend Doug Alward (Ryan McDonald, The Ballad of Jack & Rose, Fierce People), and his brother Darrell (Noah Reid, Black Hole High, Pippi Longstocking) by his side, viewers witness the moments that marked and motivated Terry to continue his fight for a cure.

From battling fierce weather conditions to meeting young cancer survivors along the way, the movie provides Canadians insight into how Terry's dream evolved and how this determined young man was able to spread his message of hope across the country.

"Twenty-five years later, Mr. Terry Fox continues to inspire all of us," said Susanne Boyce, CTV's President of Programming and Chair of the CTV Media Group. "Our presentation of this film is a compelling tribute to his unwavering spirit, his memory and ultimately, his legacy."

Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope in April 1980 when he dipped his foot into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Running 26 miles (42 kilometres) each day, Terry's marathon took him through small communities and large cities, garnering support from Canadians young and old.

After 143 days and 3,339 miles (5,373 kilometres), Terry's run came to an end on September 1 near Thunder Bay, Ontario when the cancer that cost him his right leg three years earlier spread to his lungs.

Inspiring the nation with his humility, determination and courage, Terry's impact on the fight against cancer is still evident today.

The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $360 million dollars worldwide for cancer research.

Honouring the legacy of Terry Fox continues with a multi-layered CTV promotional campaign.

On Friday, August 12, a Theatrical Trailer for TERRY, created in house by CTV, rolled on movie screens across Canada.

In addition to on-air promotions for TERRY on CTV, print advertisements hit major daily papers across the country.

Lastly, a Terry Fox Foundation PSA aired in August and early September on CTV.

In recognition of Terry Fox's generosity of spirit, TERRY's financial participants (Shaftesbury Films, CTV, COGECO Program Development Fund and The Shaw Rocket Fund) will be donating all net profits derived from worldwide sales of the movie to the Terry Fox Foundation.

TERRY was filmed on location in Toronto, Northern Ontario and Newfoundland this past June and July.
