Stimulus funding from Washington will provide new maintenance equipment for the Soo Locks, reports UpNorthLive.com news.

Through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, an Alabama firm - G&G Steel - has been awarded a $3.2-million contact to build six stoplogs for the Poe Lock.

The 100-foot-long steel devices will be used to prevent water from entering the lock and a planned replacement.

Dry conditions in the lock chambers will allow workers to perform repairs and regular maintenance.
