The following news release was issued today by the Green Party, which is being represented in Sault Ste. Marie in the current federal election by Mark Viitala (shown).

Viitala got back to us today about his background in Northern Ontario.

"I was raised in and around Sudbury," he tells SooToday.com. "Spent much time on Manitoulin as well and went for post-secondary education in Thunder Bay."

Families are invited out to Memorial Gardens on January 2, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., for a free skating party.

"Politics optional," says Kathie Brosemer, local organizer for the Green Party.

"Our candidate, Mark Viitala, is planning to be in town Monday, knocking on doors and meeting with the local Greens, so we decided to have a public event. But you don't have to talk politics if you don't want to, just come out for the skating if you like."

"The Green platform on health care emphasizes active living and prevention of illness, so it makes sense to offer people a chance to get in motion," she adds.

"If you want Mark to talk with you about our platform, pick up a Green button on your way to the ice, as a signal you're open to talking politics. He won't pester anyone who's not wearing a button."

Hot cider and snacks will be available, and people of all political colours are welcome.

"It's going to be a fun party no matter what colour button you're wearing."
