MARQUETTE, MI - George Vernon Rogers, Jr., 26, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, was sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for sexual abuse of a minor, U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis announced today.

In addition to the prison term, Senior U.S. District Judge R. Allan Edgar ordered Rogers to serve 10 years of supervised release following his release from prison and to pay a $100 special assessment.

Rogers pleaded guilty to the charge on July 1, 2010.

During his plea, Rogers admitted to having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl at his residence located on land held in trust by the U.S. for the use of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in 2008.

Rogers had previously been convicted in Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Court of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in 2002.

U.S. Attorney Davis commended the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police, the Kinross District Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their work in this case.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner.
